Brick Work & Repointing NYC

Pro Build Restoration provides expert brick work, repointing, and tuckpointing throughout New York City. From brownstone repointing in Brooklyn to commercial brick facade repair in Midtown, our experienced masons deliver precision work that stands the test of time.

Proper mortar joint maintenance is critical in NYC's freeze-thaw climate. Failed mortar allows water infiltration that can damage brick faces, building structures, and interior finishes. How It Works

Our Process

01

Inspection

We inspect all mortar joints and brick faces, probing for failed areas and identifying the cause of any brick or mortar deterioration.

02

Mortar Matching

We obtain mortar samples and develop a color-matched mortar mix to ensure seamless repairs that blend with the existing masonry.

03

Joint Raking

Deteriorated mortar is carefully raked out to a depth of 3/4" minimum without damaging brick faces or edges.

04

Repointing

Fresh mortar is packed in multiple lifts, tooled to match the existing joint profile, and struck clean.

05

Brick Replacement

Any spalling or structurally failed bricks are carefully removed and replaced with salvaged or new matching brick.

06

Final Cleaning

Completed work is cleaned to remove mortar smears and the job is left spotless.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should NYC buildings be repointed?
Mortar joints in NYC buildings typically require repointing every 25–30 years, though this varies significantly based on mortar quality, building exposure, and maintenance history. Signs that repointing is needed include visible cracks in joints, mortar that crumbles when probed, and any evidence of water infiltration behind brick walls.
What is the difference between repointing and tuckpointing?
Repointing (or pointing) refers to removing deteriorated mortar and replacing it with fresh mortar — the standard repair process. Traditional tuckpointing is a decorative technique that uses two contrasting mortar colors to create the appearance of thin, precise joints. In common NYC usage, the terms are often used interchangeably.
Can you match brownstone mortar in Brooklyn?
Yes. Matching brownstone mortar is one of our specialties. We source appropriate mortar mixes and test samples against your existing mortar to achieve an accurate color match before beginning full-scale work.
Do I need a permit for repointing in NYC?
Repointing that is limited to mortar joint repair and does not involve structural work typically does not require a NYC DOB permit. However, repointing as part of a Local Law 11 / FISP repair project does require a permit and DOB filing. We advise on permit requirements for each specific project.
